Summer 2008 Laptop RefresherFaculty, This information only applies to Faculty who received a laptop before June 2008. Each summer DIMS upgrades the software on campus for faculty and student use. This process 'refreshes' our computer network with an up-to-date operating system and current applications for the school-year. Now that we've moved to issuing laptops for full time faculty members we cannot update the software on your computers unless you bring the laptop to us. :) This summer's updates include:
How do I get my laptop refreshed? In order to 'refresh' your laptop you'll need to schedule a time to drop off your laptop to us. The refresh process gives you a clean installation of the operating system- now Mac OSX Leopard and current applications for the 2008-9 school year. The process will separate you from your laptop for one business day. Drop-off will take approximately 10-15 minutes and pick-up will take approximately 15-20 minutes. If you are around this summer we STRONGLY encourage you to refresh your laptop before we return for the start of the year. All of the tutorials, FAQs and new services this year are based on the Leopard operating system (10.5.x) which we will install on your machine as part of the laptop 'refresh' process. Q: Is there a way to get all the new software without bringing my laptop in to be refreshed? A: None that we know of at this time. Q: When can I get my laptop refreshed? Please email us (Tech Help) to schedule an appointment. We schedule you to drop off your laptop before 2:30 or so one afternoon and can usually have it ready for you the next morning. Q: What do I need to do before my appointment? 1. Backup your computer 2. Move all your FILES into your DOCUMENTS folder (we will move and restore this folder to your laptop) 3. Move all your pictures into your PICTURES folder (we will move and restore this folder to your laptop) 4. Move all your video into your MOVIES folder (and make sure you have this backed up- we cannot backup or move your videos) 5. Move all your music into your MUSIC folder (and make sure you have this backed up- we cannot backup or move your music) A note about user installed software: Q: What is user-installed software? A: user isntalled software is software you installed yourself, by purchase or download, that was not provided initially by BFS. The user installed software that you had installed will need to be re-installed on your machine once it has been refreshed. You'll need the disk or software image that you downloaded from the internet along with the serial number for the software for re-installation. Please check your software list to make sure that all packages are compatible with Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard). new versions for Leopard may be available for download. Q: What software do you reccomend I avoid? A: Please be mindful of our community and DO NOT install America Online, Bit Torrent or Limewire on your BFS-owned computer. America Online's installation package may erase or corrupt network setting you need to function on the BFS network. Limewire and Bit Torrent are peer-to-peer music/media/filesharing websites that can signifigantly slow down the funtioning of the entire BFS network. If yout computer is handed to DIMS and this software is installed on your machine we will erase your machine immediately and re-install a clean software image.
